[SUMMARY] This paper analyzes the differences in usage between passive sentences of Japanese and Chinese from the three angles of "animacy in subject," "change in subject," and "involvement between subject and action". Passive sentences in Japanese can be formed in a wide range of cases, from when the subject is animate to when the subject is inanimate, and from when the action causes change to when it does not cause change. On the other hand, passive sentences in Chinese (被字句) tend to require the subject to be animate and the action to cause a change of state or condition.
