Description

Extending healthy life expectancy by maintaining the physical functions of elderly people is being promoted. Therefore, one must ascertain the actual situation of people’s behavior of going out of the house not only in terms of aging, but also in terms of physical difficulty. This study compared actual conditions of going out according to the degree of physical difficulty using the 6th Tokyo Person Trip Survey. Results indicated that an increased degree of physical difficulty engenders a decrease in the rate of going out, increased dependence on car use, increased monotony of travel purposes, and shortening of travel times. Future populations with physical difficulties are estimated to increase considerably by 2040. Moreover, these difficulties are expected to become increasingly severe in the future. However, the study results also indicated the possibility of mitigating the worsening situation by extending healthy life expectancy.
