A Study on the Social Function of Community Sports Groups : A consideration of the effects of sports group type participation for increasing community consciousness

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the social function of community sports. The first hypothesis was that the community sports groups promote community consciousness. The second hypothesis was that A-type sports groups promote community consciousness more than B and C-type sports groups: A-type (membership is composed of neighbors), B-type (membership is drawn from a city-wide area), and C-type (membership is based on business establishment). The subjects of this investigation were 121 groups participating in softball and softbaseball teams. The total amount of participants studied were 1393 men, aged 20 to 55, and living in lchinomiya-city, and industrial city with a population of 255,008 (1982.2.1.). The results of this study suggest that certain type sports group participation increases in community activities on local and regional levels. 1. After joining a sports group, participants increased their frequency of participation in local and regional community activities. 2. After joining a sports group, the members increased their social interaction with residental neighbors. 3. A-type sports groups performed more duties as a group in local and regional activities than other types, B or C. 4. The individual member of A-type had more frequent participation than member B and C-type in local and regional community activities. 5. The members of A-type had higher levels of community morale than 8 and C-types.
