Description
This study was carried out to investigate the parasitic infection in meat goat and forages in Kikai Island, Kagoshima. Haemonchus contortus eggs, Strongyloides papillosus eggs and Coccidian oocysts were detected in feces of goat. Eggs per gram (EPG) of Haemonchus contortus was significantly higher in hay-fed than in grass-fed of goats (p<0.05), but Oocysts per gram (OPG) of Coccidian was higher in grass-fed than in hay-fed. Blood biochemical values without TCHO and GOT were normal, and there was no health damage caused by the heavy parasitic infection. Tropical grass of Pennisetum purpureum, Panicum maximum, Chloris gayana and Setaria sphacelate were abundantly found in Kikai Island. On the other hand, there were woody plants such as Casuarina equisetifolia, Morus australis, Leucaena leucocephala, Macaranga tanarius, Bischofia javanica, Pittosporum tobira and Scaevola taccada. As a nutritive values, the highest crude protein content (22.0%) and in vitro dry matter digestibility (92.2%) were obtained in Euphorbia heterophylla and Morus australis leaves, respectively.
