Reflections on the collaborative development by faculty from multiple departments of an on-demand course in which students from multiple departments learn about interprofessional collaboration.

Description

[Purpose] To identify the significance and challenges of jointly developing courses on interprofessional collaboration by faculty members with different specialties and faculty affiliations. [Methods] (1) A questionnaire survey (14 respondents from 6 faculties) and (2) group interviews (4 times, 10 respondents from 5 faculties) were conducted with faculty members who participated in the joint development from several faculties. [Results] (1) The answers obtained were “the joint development with other faculties was meaningful” (100%), “the lectures were satisfactory” (86%), and “this was the first time for the joint development” (71%), etc. (2) 62 codes were obtained from 580 segments of the verbatim transcript, and three categories were identified: “Some possibilities that emerged from reviewing the co-development experience across departments”, “Challenges in establishing the conditions required by faculty, departments, and inside and outside the university for the co-development of courses,“ and ”Challenges to be addressed in the process of co-development. [Discussion] The significance of the joint development was recognized in the educational and research growth opportunities for the participants. Issues related to the joint development of courses, such as the setting of educational objectives, cross-departmental management, and coordination of policies at the central government level, were pointed out.
