Abstract

The aim of this symposium was to share with a wide range of family researchers the fact that issues related to sexual minorities are relevant to family studies. Domestic discussions on sexual minorities are showing an unprecedented level of excitement. Public awareness has increased, and social consciousness has generally shifted in a positive direction. What kind of impact do these trends in discussions about sexual minorities have on family studies? Various examples can be given, such as coming out to families, questioning the definition of family, and the impact brought about by changes in legislation. The importance of sharing the expertise that specialists in this field have with many family researchers is increasing. The discussions at the symposium reaffirmed this importance and highlighted the challenges associated with knowledge sharing.
