Abstract

In this study, we surveyed 1,000 older adults in their 60s to 80s to clarify the actual circumstances of Internet literacy among them; furthermore, we investigated the effect of Internet literacy on their well-being. Results indicated variations in Internet literacy and efficacy and interest in using the Internet according to age groups and gender. Regarding the influence of Internet literacy on their well-being, we observed that increased Internet operation skills, troubleshooting skills, and provision of mutual aid on using the Internet increased their efficacy and interest in using the Internet. The older adults who received more mutual aid on the Internet exhibited lower efficacy and interest in using the Internet, while those with higher efficacy and interest in using the Internet exhibited improved well-being. These results suggest that well-being can be improved by promoting Internet literacy among older adults.
