Abstract

The importance of the professional attitude of social workers continues to be pointed out. The Charity Organization Society and the Settlement Movement are cited as the sources of social work, while the Settlement Movement has been described as aiming for social reform by emphasizing personal contact with the poor, the Charity Organisation Society has been mentioned as being aimed at moral indoctrination of the poor. In any case, it seems that a professional attitude was not required. However, in "A Handy-book for Visitors of the Poor in London" (1874), it was recommended to respect the poor and show it in words and attitudes, as well as adopt the attitudes that are common to current interviewing skills in social work, such as respect for self-determination, active listening, confidentiality, and controlled emotional involvement.
