Description

This paper proposes a method for predicting the characteristics of crosstalk between twisted pair cables based on a crosstalk model that focuses on the combination of the twist pitch of two pairs of twisted pair cables and assumes that local coupling occurs at unequal intervals on the transmission line. Using this model, it is shown that a large peak in near-end crosstalk occurs in the frequency band above GHz. The relationship between the frequency at which the peak occurs and the twist pitch is clarified, and directions for improvement in the application of unshielded twisted pair cables to high-speed serial data transmission at several Gbit/s are also clarified. The results show that the proposed method can predict the peak frequency of crosstalk with an error of less than 6%, although the peak occurs between 1 and 4 GHz depending on the combination of twisted-pair cable pitches. The proposed method can predict the peak frequency of near-end crosstalk with high accuracy in the frequency band above GHz, enabling more reliable system design.
