<p>OBJECTIVE: Japanese men have a shorter healthy life expectancy than women, and there is a large gap in the average life expectancy. In this study, we investigated the extent to which male elderly persons aged 80 and over who can walk independently possess physical function.</p><p>METHODS: The participants were 120 independently ambulatory men who visited the clinic from June 1, 2019, to June 1, 2021, and participated in the “Assessment of Motor Function in Men 80 Years and Older,” which included cognitive function and seven physical function measures.</p><p>RESULTS: All of the measured results were comparable or higher than those of the same age group. The results suggest that having the ability to walk independently enables the maintenance of high physical function.</p><p>CONCLUSION: The obtained measurements can serve as target values for physical function necessary to maintain the ability to walk independently and reach the age of 80 years for men under 80 years of age and healthcare professionals.</p>
