Abstract

Anaerobic digestion is becoming more important in promoting carbon neutrality in sewage works. To enhance anaerobic digestion, it is crucial to understand the factors that influence the amount of gas generated per volatile solids input and the annual volatility of gas. Therefore, we studied the current situation in Japan by conducting a questionnaire survey on anaerobic digestion and tried to extract factors associated with increased gas production and stabilizing gas generation. Only approximately half of the wastewater treatment plants generated gas according to the design guidelines. There is an association between the amount of gas generated and volatility, indicating the effects of the input TS, treatment area, digestion period, and digestion temperature, among others. Because these factors may be multicollinear, the input TS concentration was a factor that affected both the gas generation amount and fluctuation rate when the analysis was performed using rough set analysis, which is a data mining technique. It was believed that input TS (≥4%) and digestion temperature (<30°C) were extracted as important indicators.
