Abstract

ʻSinceroʼ and its noun form ʻsinceritàʼ were favourate expressions for Michelangelo Antonioni (1906-2007), one of the most important directors in the film and cultural history. These words are found to be employed repeatedly throughout his life to judge other directors and their works as well as himself and his own works. ʻSinceroʼ is defined by Lo Zingarelli as ʻche nellʼagire, nel parlare e. sim., esprime con assoluta verità ciò che sente, ciò che pensa(=in oneʼs behaviour, speech etc., expressing with absolute truth what one feels, what one thinks)ʼ. Antonioniʼs use of ʻsinceroʼ closely follows this definition, laying particular emphasis on its relation to ʻwhat one thinksʼ. His use also sometimes echoes a figurative usage of the original Latin ʻsincerusʼ: ʻstyle probe[qui ne dissimule pas, qui rend lʼidée directement(ʼ F. Gaffiot). After establishing these points, the present article examines the way Antonioni, using the concept of ʻsinceritàʼ, makes judgments about ten films made by other directors, from Lloydʼs Wells Fargo(1937) to Altmanʼs Quintet (1979).
