Abstract

This paper looks at the nature of Augustine's methodology of biblical interpretation, practiced in his early days as a bishop from 396 to 400, and approaches it as an unsettled problem. Between his writings in this period, Teaching Christianity, The First Catechetical Instruction and Against Faustus, M. Cameron asserts that there is a difference in interpretative approaches. Contrary to Cameron's opinion, this paper refutes the difference claimed by Cameron by analyzing the texts of Augustine and clarifying three shortcomings of Cameronʼs theory.
