Effects of FBG Time-Distribution on Laser Dynamics

We investigate the impact of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) length on the dynamics of a semiconductor laser with FBG feedback. While the spectral filtering of the FBG is known to have a major effect on the laser dynamics, we show that its reflectivity profile and phase response also play an important role. A stability enhancement is ex-pected when the FBG is sufficiently narrowband to filter out the relaxation oscillation sidebands of the laser. How-ever, we observe a variety of behavior depending on the detuning between the laser and the FBG, showing that the spectral interpretation is not sufficient to fully explain the laser response. In particular, we record a strong asym-metry between positive and negative detuning. Using ar-bitrary spectral features for the reflector, we demonstrate that the laser dynamics is also influenced by the slope of the reflectivity profile and the dispersion in the external cavity. Our findings have implications for the design and optimi-zation of systems relying on FBG feedback and shed light on the underlying physics.
