Abstract

In heavy weather, container ships experience high slamming pressure on the bow flare, which causes hull-girder vibrations defined as whipping. Whipping is considered to affect the hull-girder ultimate strength by superimposing such vibrations to the rigid-ship vertical bending moment in waves. Different types of elastic vibrations may occur, whipping being one of them, and their prediction by simulation involves several uncertainties, which are known to lead to significant discrepancies between numerical estimates and experimental values. In the current study, elastic vibrations are analyzed both experimentally and analytically by hammering tests, and a whipping experiment on a model scale ship is carried out for statistical validation of whipping simulations.
