Abstract

This study was performed among home-visit nurses around the country to clarify the relationship between the actual procedures required for safe disimpaction and the knowledge of adverse events that could develop if the procedures are not performed. A Chi-square test was used to examine the relationship between procedures and knowledge. We found that home-visit nurses performed the procedures required for safe disimpaction at a high rate and had good knowledge of potential adverse events related to failure to perform these procedures. In addition, the home-visit nurses attached importance to their own judgement, rather than instructions from a physician. The lowest performance rate was found for “use of lubricants other than xylocaine on fingers to avoid xylocaine shock symptoms” (87.6%). However, no significant correlation was observed between procedures and knowledge for all items. Based on these findings, we suggest that an environment should be established with use of alternate lubricants to increase the performance rate of procedures for safe disimpaction without development of xylocaine shock symptoms.
