Abstract

The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) launched the GALAXY CRUISE project in 2019, in which non-professionals access observational data taken by the Subaru Telescope and participate in galaxy classifications through the internet. This is the first astronomical citizen science project in Japan using big data. This project has distinguishable features not included in other citizen science projects outside Japan, such as detailed training menus, cosmic ocean-themed worldview, and gamification. This paper presents the project’s progress and time changes in users’ motivations and characteristics based on the questionnaire results.
