Abstract

On the basis of hydraulic model experiment using a wide tank as well as related numerical experiment, we investigated the stability of armor blocks covering a rubble mound around breakwater head. Special attention was paid to the application of a formula proposed for calculating the required mass of an armor block, obtained from two-dimensional idealized studies, in the vicinity of the breakwater head, which involves complex three-dimensional hydrodynamic fields. We confirmed that the distribution of the hydrodynamic force acting on an armor block and movement of the blocks placed on the mound slope were similar to those reported from the two-dimensional experiment, showing the formula for calculating the required mass of an armor block, based on idealized studies, applicabale for qualitatively evaluating the required mass at breakwater head. However, the stability of the blocks at breakwater head was lower than those from the two-dimensinal results, owing to the existence of a complex, three-dimensional flow field. This suggests that using the calculation coefficient derived from the two-dimensional experiment, which is simpler to perform compared to the three-dimensional one, might underestimate the stability mass required around the breakwater head.
