Abstract

A 17-year-old castrated male Kiso horse bred in the Kanto area presented with hypodynamia, anorexia and neurologic signs such as limb ankylosis and nystagmus. The animal died after a short period of recumbency. An autopsy revealed gray to white masses in bilateral kidneys and the lesser curvature of the stomach. Histopathologically, multifocal, randomly distributed granulomatous lesions were identified in the brain, bilateral kidneys and stomach. Within these lesions, numerous nematodes measuring approximately 20 μm in diameter were identified, showing a rhabditiform esophagus. These morphological characteristics of the nematodes and sequencing of the 28S ribosome RNA genome indicated the nematodes to be Halicephalobus gingivalis. H. gingivalis infections have not previously been reported in horses native to Japan, and more data must be collected for the preservation of these horses.
