Description

In a landfill with a large area, huge landfill capacity, and heterogeneous waste, it is not easy to properly select representative points in monitoring. It is desirable to monitor the interior of the landfill in an areal and even three-dimensional manner. Optical fiber sensors can measure physical quantities such as temperature, and it is thought that they can be used to understand the temperature distribution at the boundary between the landfill site and the surrounding environment. In this study, we measured the temperature distribution in the capping of an actual waste landfill in order to clarify the possibility of using optical fiber sensors to determine the temperature distribution at the boundary between the waste landfill and the natural environment. As a result, the following two findings were obtained: 1. The optical fiber sensor wired in the capping layer revealed a maximum temperature difference of 1.7°C within the capping layer; 2. The temperature change at a depth of 45 cm below the surface of the capping layer exhibited a time delay of approximately 11 hours and 30 minutes relative to air temperature.
