Abstract

Directional couplers of simple structure which consist of H-plane or E-plane waveguides crossing in cruciform and possess good distribution characteristics have been proposed. Considering that planar circuits such as microstrip lines can be treated in the same way as E-plane waveguide circuits, it is expected that a coupler having the same configuration will be realized in a planar circuit form. In this paper, designing of a cruciform directional coupler is attempted by microstrip and it is shown that good 3-dB characteristics are realized at Ku- and K-bands. It is also shown that the broadband characteristics can be realized by adding external matching circuits. Finally, the validity of the design results is demonstrated by experiments.
