The transformation of the media environment in recent years has caused the problem of ‘news deserts’, places where news media does not exist, to become increasingly prevalent across the world. Journalism represents an essential aspect of a well-functioning democratic society, providing residents with public interest news and holds local authorities to account. Yet, the decline in the number of newspaper subscriptions and shifts in local advertising have created problems for sustainable journalism operations. However, the functions and difficulties of journalism are generally little understood in Japan. This paper argues that the public good of journalism cannot be sustainably managed without the appreciation of citizens. The author focuses on financing models for non-profit journalism, and posits the need for increased media literacy to support sustainable journalism in communities.
