Abstract

Open pelvic fractures are rare, comprising only 2 to 4% of all pelvic fractures. Open pelvic fractures are traumatic injuries with high rates of complications and injuries to adjacent organs such as the rectum and urethra. Patients with open wounds in the rectum or perineum are at significant risk of developing a severe type of sepsis called pelvic sepsis, which has been classified as one of the most severe diseases (its mortality rate is 44%). If the anal sphincter is damaged to the point that reconstruction is impossible, fecal contamination of the perineum is inevitable. An infection delays fracture reconstruction and affects the functional prognosis. This article discusses the case of an open pelvic fracture with an anorectal injury resulting in fecal contamination of the perineal wound. In this case, sepsis was successfully treated and a favorable functional prognosis was achieved.
