Abstract

This paper examines Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back! (dir. Kunihiko Yuyama, 1998) from two perspectives: animal studies and character theory. Pokemon, fictional creatures in the media franchise, function as mediators between humans and nature and as animal figures that endorse the use of nature by humans by voluntarily subordinating to humans in the film that corresponds to issues and debates in animal studies. From the perspective of character theory in anime and manga studies, the issues related to animal studies in the film can be interpreted as an impossible act of staging a "sovereign" subject under the premise of the iconographic kyara (character) replicability. This paper revealed that the proliferation of iconographic kyara, whether human or Pokemon, makes the question of the possi bility of an equal relationship between Pokemon and humans merely a gimmick that is repeated in the media franchise.
