Abstract

After reviewing the literature on gender as well as interspousal wealth gap, this paper assesses the interspousal wealth gap in the case of Japan using data from the Japanese Panel Survey of Consumers. It shows that wives tend to hold less wealth than their husbands in Japan, as in the case of Western societies, but that the magnitude of the interspousal wealth gap is larger in Japan than that in Western societies.
