This article explores the relationship between feminist criticism, particularly by Andrea Dworkin, and Georges Bataille’s “écriture.” Much of the critical work on Bataille assimilates his sexist theories in Erotism with the manifestation of those theories in his fiction and essay without acknowledging potential contradictions between the two bodies of work. For instance, Susan Rubin Suleiman and Chris Vanderwees, in their close examination of Bataille’s fiction, Story of the Eye, have discovered new possibilities in male-female relationships which may initially appear as misogynistic pornography. While the brilliance of these analyses is unquestionable, a shared blind spot exists in their consideration : fixed gender roles. The author takes note of Bataille’s “écriture,” which describes experiences where the writing-self and the reading-self transform and divide beyond self-identity, which becomes the experience itself and invites readers to partake in it. In the experience of venturing beyond one’s own limits, traditional power dynamics between men and women cease to exist. Herein lies the potential of Bataille’s philosophy beyond Bataille.
