Since the 1980s, state attorney generals, who are state-level elected officials in the United States, have worked to nullify proposed federal legislation and block presidential executive orders using multi-state lawsuits as their litigation strategy. Thus, these attorney generals have become policymakers who are integral to US politics. At the same time, politics in the United States has become increasingly polarized, and partisan political issues have caused the political role of attorney generals to expand. This paper examines the expansion of the political role of state attorney generals by analyzing the positions they have taken on the issue of abortion, which was considered the most important and partisan issue of the state attorney general elections held in 2022. The conclusion notes that, as state attorneys general are being held accountable by voters, the positions they take on controversial issues may create direct changes in the future enforcement of abortion laws.
