Abstract

Low temperature cracking of asphalt pavement occurs in the cold region of Hokkaido, resulting in reduced speed and increased vibration acceleration for emergency transportation. In this study, road surface properties, FWD measurement, excavation survey, and core sampling were conducted on asphalt pavements with many cold cracks in Hokkaido, Japan. The results of FWD measurements indicated that the bearing capacity of the asphalt mixture layer in the vicinity of the cold cracks was about 20% of that of the sound part. The open-cut investigation revealed that the cracks penetrated through the asphalt mixture layer, and that the lower part of the asphalt mixture layer had been converted to sediment. The cracks penetrated through the asphalt mixture layer, and the lower part of the asphalt mixture layer was graded. The core sampling results showed that the more the surface cracks progressed, the more the interior damage progressed.
