Abstract

type:text

This paper focuses on Japan’s high-growth period, and examines the challenges faced by the transportation company as they diversified into the trucking business. The main business of the transportation company was to broker cargo for railroad transportation, but many of them also owned their own trucks and other means of transportation. As economic growth led to an increase in a variety of cargoes, including those related to the machinery industry, rail freight forwarding, which had specialized in materials-based cargoes, became difficult to use. In addition, freight rates remained low, and there were limits to the rationalization of cargo handling and pickup/delivery operations. The transportation company diversified into the trucking business, which was an adjacent field, and this led to the decline of Japan National Railways freight transportation.
