Abstract

Based on the interviews with the descendants of settlers of different ages in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido, who lived in Ashoro Town and worked in forestry for different years, the traditional tree use culture and the process of its disappearance in Ashoro town was investigated. Older forest workers had more knowledge about tree names and the usage of wood. Furthermore, even among relatively young forest workers, those who using firewood had more knowledge about wood property of each species than those who used fossil fuels. No direct relationship between Japanese and Ainu culture was recognized. It was suggested that the traditional culture of wood usage is rapidly disappearing as opportunities to use wood decrease.
