Abstract

Until the end of the 20th century, most universities in Japan conducted education based on the values of the professors. The biggest problem in dental education is that the content of instruction is not standardized from course to course and from university to university. This leads to a gap between the education demanded by society and the education provided by universities. In the 21st century, there is a movement to change this educational system of medicine and dentistry. One of the major pillars of this movement is the formulation of a model core curriculum that defines common educational goals throughout Japan. Another is the introduction of a national standardized common examination to evaluate the level of achievement. This shared examination will become official in 2024. In addition, the Japanese government amended the Dentist Act to legally allow dental students to practice dentistry. This policy of promoting clinical practice based on participation in medical treatment is one of the signs of a major change in the dental education system. In this paper, we would like to report on these changes in the dental education system and future trends.
