Abstract

This article examines the experiences of international students who delayed their arrival in Japan due to the effects of COVID-19. The study focuses on the challenges encountered by these students during the waiting period in their home countries and upon their arrival in Japan. All four participants in the survey were international students from Eastern Europe enrolled in higher education institutions in Japan at the time of the study. Employing SCAT (Steps for Coding and Theorization), I analyzed participants’ narratives from their initial encounters with the Japanese language to the survey period, emphasizing preand post-arrival circumstances. The findings reveal that each participant faced situations inducing anxiety or dissatisfaction during the waiting period. Each student adopted individual coping mechanisms until they eventually arrived in Japan. In some cases, maintaining motivation was facilitated by employment opportunities during the waiting period and online classes at the study abroad destination. While some international students embraced new challenges upon arriving in Japan, others faced a decline in mental health, requiring long-term treatment. This paper delves into the behavioral and emotional aspects of facing difficulties and explores their underlying contextual factors.
