The Chinese film, Devils on the Doorstep (2000), directed by Jiang Wen, was a film with the theme of Second Sino-Japanese War.Although it won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, it has been banned from screening in China. It released in Japan in 2002 and won the MAINICHI FILM AWARDS for Best Foreign Film. It also ranked 3rd in Kinema Junpo’s top ten foreign films. Although it has not been released publicly in China, viewers still found other ways through the internet, TV channels, and DVD to watch the film and have given it high praise. In this article, I consider both the perspectives of reviews given by critics and online film enthusiasts in Japan.Furthermore, this will be contrasted against the focal point, interpretation, and understanding of the film in China.
