<p>When it was reported in 2018 that a famous Japanese singer was diagnosed with tongue cancer, there was an increase in the number of patients who visited dental clinics and hospitals. The outbreak of the coronavirus infection (COVID‐19) was first reported in December 2019. We examined how the social landscape and media reports such as these affected the number of first‐time patients visiting our hospital in the past five years. We collected information monthly on the age and gender of patients who visited the Second Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Osaka Dental University Hospital for the first time between January 2018 and December 2022. For patients under the age of 18, we also compared the trend in the number of patients during vacations and outside of vacations using the Mann‐Whitney U test. We further compared the number of patients who visited before and after the news about tongue cancer was reported, and analyzed them by age group. The number of patients under the age of 18 increased significantly during vacations for all years. There was a significant increase in the number of patients in 2019 compared with 2018 for males 41 to 64 years of age and females aged 41 years of age and older.
