説明

This paper explores how Japanese activists conceived “Third World”/“Third Worldism” and linked themselves with the movements in non-western regions during the late 1960s to early 1970s. The “Third Worldism” was a significant part of the global sixties movement. While it also influenced the Japanese sixties on its radicalization and transnationalization, Japan’s comparatively unique position within the three-world model, being one of the very few non-western countries in the “First World” region at that time, brought an ambivalent and complex attitude while forming solidarity with the Third World. Through analysis of activist adoptions of “Third World”/“Third Worldism” concepts and their translation of Franz Fanon, the paper discusses the ways in which Japanese intellectual/activists developed a unique interpretation of the Third World – a space of personal enmity – as well as a certain moral sentiment – solidarity with sacrifice – while searching for possibilities to build solidarity with the “Third World.”
