Description

In April 2024, “work style reforms for medical doctors” is expected to be implemented, and an annual cap on overtime and holiday work hours has been set for medical doctors engaged in medical care. The “Japanese Society of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Working Group on Workplace Reform” conducted a questionnaire survey to determine the impact of the “work style reforms” on individual doctors and medical institutions in the field of otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery.

The questionnaire survey of the core facilities indicated that approximately 30% of the facilities are working at the A level. Only 2.5% of the facilities planned to report the C2 level. Approximately 30% of the facilities planned to report a collaborative B level. The most common reason for working at more than one facility was to increase the income, according to the results of the individual physician survey, indicating that the salary at the primary facility is not sufficient. The second most common reason was to contribute to local medical care. In the future, it will be necessary to devise and make efforts to obtain the necessary income, contribution to the community, and work content within the A level without having to apply for the collaboration B program. In addition, it is important for all parties involved to work together to address these overarching issues. This will suggest ways to enable sustainable ways of working. This will contribute to the future development of the field of otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery. It is our hope that the information obtained from this survey will be used as basic data for future studies.
