Description

The purpose of this study is to propose the design of pictograms that respond to diversity, referring to 1930s US resources. In this report, we described our approach to the selection of specific human pictograms for use in preliminary experiments. As selection criteria, five categories were set up: standard, neutral, humanization, dramatization, and abstract, and typical pictograms were taken from Modley’s 1000 Pictorial Symbols (1942) and other sources. Pictograms representing the two postures of “slouching” and “looking up” were selected for the development category, and pictograms representing the action of “pointing” were selected for the dramatization category. Finally, design adjustments were made to accommodate modern uses.
