Facing the rapid aging of society due to ongoing advances in medicine, many developed countries have made moves to legalize euthanasia. From the hedonistic point of view, this article argues for the necessity of euthnasia, not only as personal demand but also as social request. It consists of six sections. 1.Ideological review of the transition from “euthanasia” to “death with dignity”. 2.Steps towards the legalization of euthanasia in the Netherlands. 3.Some euthanasia incidents in Japan. 4.Struggles towards passing a euthanasia bill in Japan. 5.Some prospective problems arising from an increasing tolerance of euthanasia. 6.The author’s response to the problems posited in the previous section.
