説明
Since April 2021, the Kyushu University Institute for Asian and Oceanian Studies (Q-AOS) has been implementing free online seminar series called the Brown Bag Seminar (BBS) every Wednesday lunch time. As of September 2024, the 150th BBS has been conducted with data from 4,361 individuals who pre-registered. Among them, 68% (2,970 individuals) actually participated in BBS but 32% (1391 individuals) did not. Excluding data which participant’s age and gender information missing, we analyzed 1,385 individuals who ever participated in BBS at least once. Of those, 46% (642 individuals) participated more than twice, while 54% (743 individuals) participated only once. The purpose of this research is to investigate the factors associated with non-repeat participation. We found factors associated with non-repeat participation are "young people in their teens to 30s" and "participants from foreign universities, other foreign government & non-government organizations/private companies/international organizations outside Japan, as well as Japan’s domestic private & public corporations, associations, foundations including NGOs and NPOs, Japan’s domestic universities and educational institutions other than Kyushu University, freelance/self-employed, unemployed, retired people, housewives, and from domestic companies." To reach a broader audience and increase the repeat participation among these young people and individuals from domestic and oversea organizations outside of Kyushu University, following strategies are recommended: (1) Use of social media, such as “LinkedIn”, “Line”, “WhatsApp”, “X” (formerly Twitter), “YouTube” , (2) Invite guest speakers from outside of Kyushu University, and (3) Foster more interactive discussions, both among multiple guest speakers and between guest speakers and participants, particularly from outside Kyushu University. Such openness and flexibility may be effective to increase the sense of engagement, interest, benefits for repeat BBS participations among people from outside Kyushu University.
