説明
This study examines the Takarazuka Revue from the perspective of Chinese fans, focusing on the gender performance of otokoyaku. Established in 1914, the Takarazuka Revue has grown over the past century to achieve international recognition. The unique appeal of the troupe lies in its male-role performers (otokoyaku), who embody an “idealized masculinity” that captivates audiences both on and off stage. These performers strive to maintain an otokoyaku image in their daily lives, influenced significantly by their fans, who play a crucial role in shaping and sustaining this gender performance. In recent decades, Takarazuka has expanded its reach to China. And consequently, there has been a notable increase in Chinese fans, who engage primarily through social media platforms rather than in-person fan club activities, typical in Japan. This study explores how Chinese fans perceive and interpret the otokoyaku's performances and how these perceptions influence their own gender perspectives and daily lives. Utilizing semi-structured interviews with 12 Chinese fans, who are mostly active in SNS and fan clubs, this research delves into their motivations, experiences of fan activities, and interpretations of Takarazuka's gender dynamics. The findings reveal a complex interplay between cultural fascination and personal identity, highlighting the significant impact of Takarazuka's gender performance on its Chinese fans. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the transnational appeal of Takarazuka and the role of fan culture in the global context.
