説明

This study empirically examined dance-mediated exchanges observed in street dance improvisation activities in urban spaces. The goal of the study was to clarify the detailed exchange process of improvisational communication. The research methods included video analysis and participant observation of recordings of sessions in which the researcher and a total of six others had participated previously. Each of the sessions was overviewed in its entirety based on the recorded data; the researcher recalled the situation at the time of the recording and extracted components of the session and interactions that were observed in the session. Specifically, “main dance,” “sub-dance,” “music,” and “formation” were extracted as components, and “main dance,” “independent sub-dance,” “synchronization,” “collaboration,” and “eccentricity” were extracted as interactions. Based on this data, the improvisational communication process of the session was divided into three phases: “introduction phase,” “development phase,” and “convergence phase. Study results revealed that the improvisational communication process of the sessions shows a gradual transition from the “introduction,” “development,” and “convergence” phases. It was also found that this improvisational communication developed in an autonomous and generative manner when safety and security were ensured.
