Description

The Swinhoe's tree lizard was introduced to Hyuga City, and the Okinawa tree lizard was introduced to Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture, both of which are listed as invasive alien species. There is a concern about its impact on the ecosystem. In spite of manual trapping by hand and sticky trap to control their populations, the density of the tree lizard has been gradually increasing, suggesting that more effective trapping methods are needed. These tree lizards were found in trees and on the ground from April to November. From December to March, they were thought to winter, but their locations have been unknown. Therefore, in this study, we conducted a survey to determine the location of the wintering site of the tree lizard to enable the capturing during winter. This study showed that the tree lizards overwintered by immobilizing on the ground or under fallen leaves and almost all tree lizards can be captured because of their immobilization. This study indicated the possibility of using a new effective trapping to control tree lizards.
