Vicikicchā is the term used to indicate the confusion of the Buddhist practitioner in the Path. This is regarded as one of the afflictions because it does not make the disciplinant turn to enlightenment. In Buddhist path theory, practitioners abandon this affliction when they reach the stage of insight (dassana-magga), in other words, when acquiring the paññā to see the truth.

Even in Abhidharma Buddhism, this theory has been inherited. However, how one should practice until attaining paññā and the stage of insight differs among Buddhist schools. For example, the Sarvāstivāda insisted that one can reach the truth by contemplating the Four Noble Truths repeatedly and having right view. On the other hand, the Sthaviravāda held one can attain paññā awareness of dependent arising after practicing samādhi.

In this paper, I studied the words of vicikicchā in the Visuddhimagga and Vimuttimagga. As a result, I conclude that vicikicchā can be classified in two aspects.

One postpones the finality of the truth paññā and does not reach the truth; the other hesitates in entering into samādhi because of the pañca-nīvaraṇa.

The Abhidharma treatises are focused on the enumeration of dharmas, for this, paññā is important. So the practice of samādhi is often disregared. But in the Pāli treatises, one can notice some attention given to meditation practices.
