Abstract

Test satellite broadcasting of UHDTV started on August 1st, 2016. In 2018, practical satellite broadcasting of UHDTV will begin by using the right- and left-hand circular polarization in the 12-GHz band. For satellite broadcasting reception, a low noise block converter of a receiving antenna converts the 12-GHz band receiving signals to the intermediate frequency (IF) and the IF signals are transmitted with coaxial cables or optical fibers. ARIB STD-B63, which is the standard for UHDTV satellite receivers, standardized the currently used IF (1032.23 to 2070.25 MHz) and the left-hand circular polarization IF (2224.41 to 3223.25 MHz). STD-B63 also defined the specifications of a fiber optical transmission system for the IF signals. Therefore, we fabricated and tested a satellite signal amplifier and an optical transmission system, which are able to transmit the right- and left-hand circular polarization IF bands. By using 50-wave IF modulated signals, we evaluated the required C/N from measured results in bit error rate of ISDB-S3. The evaluation results confirmed that the C/N degradation of the fabricated satellite signal amplifier and the optical transmission system were 0.3 dB and 0.1 dB, respectively.
