Abstract

The 3rd Science and Technology Basic Plan sets 6 concepts as policy goals regarding science and technology, one of which is to make Japan the world’s safest country. On the basis of this basic plan, the Japanese government as a whole is promoting science and technology for a safe and secure society. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) is now conducting two research projects, in which we are developing various sensing techniques targeting explosives, chemical agents or biological agents. These projects put emphasis on a cross-cutting approach, implementation to society and the public, and collaboration with ministries implementing countermeasures against various risks. The coming 4th Science and Technology Basic Plan will attach importance to research and development aiming to solve global challenges, as well as to promote basic science. In this context, science and technology for a safe and secure society continues to be important from the political viewpoint.
