Abstract

Ceramic is the world’s oldest man-made material and serves as an essential material supporting modern times. In this article, research studies on the cultivation of electroactive functionalities in transparent oxides as the major constituent of ceramic viewed from a material design utilizing their intrinsic nature are reviewed. Described are advances in the functioning of a cement constituent 12CaO⋅7Al2O3, transparent amorphous oxide semiconductors and their thin film transistor application for displays, the designing of p-type transparent semiconductors and the functioning of oxide interfaces. The carrier doping issue and p/n control in wide-gap oxides are discussed using a band lineup.
