Abstract

A new processor architecture is proposed in order to build humanlike soft computing systems directly on silicon integrated circuits. The architecture is based on the fact that human perception, recognition and understanding of daily events largely depends on unconscious processing by the brain, i. e. , the automatic recall of the most relevant events in the vast memory of past experience. Being inspired by such a biological principle, we developed a psychological brain-based VLSI system in which the computing primitive is “association” instead of arithmetic operation of CPUs. Applications of the system to robust image recognition similar to human perception and to expert analysis of medical X-ray images are presented as examples of such a system.
