Abstract

Topological insulators represent a new quantum state of matter characterized by gapless surface states that appear on top of a gapped bulk state due to a topological principle. Those surface states consist of helically spin-polarized massless Dirac fermions, which present such unusual properties as dissipationless spin currents and weak antilocalization effects. Furthermore, it is expected that if superconductivity is induced in the surface states, they harbor non-Abelian Majorana fermions that allow topological quantum computations. In this article, the basics of topological insulators are reviewed and the perspective on their current research themes is presented.
