<p>Recent global climate and environmental trends have caused great concern and highlight the importance of collecting new information for precisely forecasting our future environment. This paper is a review of the progress in the development of lidars or laser radars as active remote sensing technology for studying global climate and environmental changes. The prospect of laser photonics and laser networking technology are also discussed.</p>
