Description

The present study aimed to examine the usage and merits of an automatic medication dispenser (AMD) and a web-based monitoring system that were recently developed in Japan. We investigated changes in medication usage and burden associated with the medication on patients and caregivers by providing an AMD for 3 months to outpatients with problems of medication self-management. Four elderly patients with chronic heart failure (age: 72-86 years), whose Mini Mental State Examination score was 25-30, participated in this study. Additional support was provided mainly by a researcher who filled the AMD with medication once every two weeks. This study demonstrated that using an AMD facilitated adherence to the dosage regimen, increased a sense of reassurance, etc., and also revealed the needs for adopting measures to enable patient outings.
